fall Salmon Fishing tips?
its gonna be my first fall this year coming up that i am gonna try salmon fishing for kings, steelheads and brown trout in the Lake Ontario tribs. I need some tips like what kind of rod to get, line, rigs, and lures/baits.
The bodies of water that ill be fishing is the oak orchard creek, genesee river gorge, and the Salmon river… if you know any those bodies of water help me out with some good locations for the oak and salmon river would be helpful.
oh and i know that steelhead take egg sack patterns and i could use spoons and spinners, but what else, and how would i rig the egg sack
I can help your egg sack question only. Trout love Salmon eggs. This may sound stupid but it works very well. First check the fish cleaning stations for eggs from previous fish. Grab all you can and keep cool. If you cannot find any, you will have to buy some from a bait shop. Now buy a pair of women’s pantyhose (light tan and cheap) and a spool of red thread.
We always tied our egg sacks the night before and it is a two person job. Remove the upper portion of the pantyhose and discard. Touch your forefinger to your thumb to make a ring. Slip inside leg of hose. Make a shallow cup in the hose and drop in the loose eggs. You want the finished ball to be about the size of a nickel. Pinch the hose tight to the eggs and wrap with thread and tie off. Trim hose close to knot. Make a bunch.
To fish, use a #6 treble on the end of your line. About 2 feet up place a heavy sinker. Fish in the lake where the stream feeds in. Cast out and let weight settle to the bottom. Apply tension to line and wait for a big one.
We would wade into Lake Michigan at the Platte River and do this every October. There was a line of people, waist deep in the water about every ten feet. When anyone got a fish on the line would separate to give room. Very courteous group.
