Need Trout Fishing Help! Mainly rig and set up!?
Hello. I am used to pike fishing though that has become a failure i am going to go to a Loch that has trout in it. i have been reading online that i need to use 4 pound test line. Anyone have any favourite brands i should be looking out for with this? it also told me to use a 1/4-1/2 ounce egg sinker is this correct? and lastly it says connect line and egg sinker to a barrel sinker then tie pre-tied gang hook to the swivel, I have been looking up gang hooks online and looks like thats an american term. its basicly 2 hooks pre-tied to fishing line. Anyone know what the uk term for these is? OR IF ANYONE HAS A BETTER RIG SET UP FOR ME TO USE THAT WOULD BE AMAZING,
Oh and also i plan on using floatable Powerbait to raise it off the ground,
Thanks guys hope yous can help i am ultimately stuck
I have used the following set-up across the great USA and it always works. I especially like it here in Alaska where we specifically target trout and salmon. It works with a variety of baits, but your use of Power-Bait will be a PERFECT choice. Try the following:
I prefer the clearest line I can find and have a preference for Berkley Trilene. I use 6# test the most, but also have a reel or two with 4# test. (I have caught 25# carp on 6# test line.) From my experience, I believe that if I can see the line under water, the fish can see it even better than I can. BIG fish are smart fish, so clear and small diameter line is important. Clip off about 3 or 4 feet of line from your monofilament, being sure there are no nicks or abrasions anywhere on the short line. Onto the main line to your reel slide an egg sinker of a size appropriate to the type of water you will be fishing. Calm pond or lake water requires less weight than fast moving stream water. The idea of the weight is to just give you enough to make a good cast. It doesn’t take much to hold a bait offering near the bottom.
After you have slid the sinker onto your line, tie a swivel to the end of the line. This keeps the sinker from sliding further down toward the baited hook. Then tie the short line to the other end of the swivel.
Depending on the depth of vegetation, I decide how far off the bottom I need or want my Power-Bait to suspend. Normally, I tie a length so the bait rises just above the bottom cover. That can change a lot from one area to another and you may have to adjust accordingly. My short line averages between 1 to 2 feet or so, and rarely as much as 3 feet, and only then when I am fishing in tall vegetation which I try hard to avoid.
I prefer very small treble hooks rather than a single hook (where legal) because the dough baits stay on the hook better. Also, it is easier for the floating baits to lift a small hook over a larger and heavier one. And I keep my offering as small or smaller than a small grape.
When a trout takes the offering, the line slides freely through the egg sinker with little or no resistance so the trout is more apt to hang on instead of dropping the bait when it feels anything unnatural. For that reason, I tend to fish this rig with a loose line rather than a tight one. When I see the line start to go out, I know I have a taker. And then it’s just a matter of setting the hook and getting down to business. This method is practically fool proof and works exceptionally well with trout, but a change of baits will make it equally efficient with other fish as well. Try it. You’re going to like it.
